Essential Items Needed For Beginner Home Cooks

Hello, everyone! This is a checklist of items for the aspiring new home cook. Starting out at your own place can be daunting. There are so many things a new home needs and the kitchen is no different. Hopefully, this will help simplify that for you. I believe these are essential items that will assist they beginner in function and efficiency. Feel free to skip if you are not a novice home cook or offer your own suggestions, in the comments.

Cutting Board

A good quality cutting board is a must-have for any home cook. Look for one that is durable, easy to clean, and large enough to accommodate your chopping needs. Some wood cutting boards can be antibacterial if cared for correctly. I prefer it for that reason. Plastic may be more budget friendly but tends to chip and you really don’t want plastic pieces/shavings/dust in your food.

Knives

A set of high-quality knives is essential. Invest in a chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife. High quality does not necessarily have to cost a fortune. Scope out reviews and with a little patience, you will find the ones that suit your needs best.

Pots and Pans

A must-have. Variety is key for cooking all types of food. Look for a saucepan, a frying pan, and a stockpot. Non-stick options are great for easy cleanup; be sure they are without PFTE, PFAS and PFOAs.

Measuring Cups and Spoons

Accurate measurements are crucial in cooking, especially for baking. Invest in a set of measuring cups and spoons to ensure your recipes turn out just right.

Utensils

Utensils can be fun. I love colorful sets, as they help brighten the kitchen and my mood. Neutral colors are great too. Be sure your set includes a spatulatongs, a whisk, and a slotted spoon. Another item in this realm is a pair of kitchen shears. Do have at least two so you don’t have to constantly clean them on the spot.

Mixing Bowls

A set of mixing bowls in various sizes is essential for mixing ingredients, marinating, and serving. I prefer stainless steel so I can throw them in the dishwasher after. If space is an issue, look for ones that can nest or are stackable.

Baking Sheets

If you enjoy baking, a couple of baking sheets are a must-have. We use ours all the time. Whether it is Roasting fresh veggies, baking sweets or frozen french fries… the baking sheet can’t be beat.

Storage Containers

Last for this entry, a set of storage containers to store leftovers and ingredients. Somehow they always seem to walk away, especially lids… so have some spares.  Look for containers that are microwave and dishwasher safe for convenience.

I think that is all for now. As always, leave any questions, comments or suggestions. Let the cooking commence! I’ll see you on the trail!
