Having a well-stocked pantry is essential for any home cook. It ensures that you have the basics on hand to whip up a delicious meal at a moment’s notice. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or just starting out in the kitchen, these are some key items that you should always have in your pantry:
1. Cooking Oils:
Olive oil, avocado oil, vegetable oil, and canola oil are versatile options that can be used for sautéing, frying, dipping, and baking. They add flavor and richness to your dishes.
2. Spices and Herbs:
A variety of spices and herbs can elevate the flavor of your meals. Essentials like salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder should be in every pantry. I’d also like to include oregano, thyme, paprika, curry powder and cumin.
3. Canned Goods:
Stocking up on canned goods is a great way to have ingredients readily available. Items like canned tomatoes, beans, corn, and broth can be used in a wide range of recipes, from soups and stews to pasta sauces and chili. In our home, we can never have enough vegetable broth and canned beans; they serve as a great base for many dishes.
4. Pasta and Rice:
These pantry staples are versatile and can be the base for many dishes. Choose a variety of pasta shapes and types of rice to add variety to your meals. White rice and pasta are great because they are such an empty canvas; your imagination is the only limitation. With 4 kids, if we run out of rice or pasta… they definitely let us hear it.
5. Baking Essentials:
Even if you do not bake often, these staples can be utilized in other ways. Flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda are essential for baking; and they are also useful for thickening sauces and breading meats.
6. Condiments:
Condiments are not only for burgers, hotdogs and sandwiches. Having a variety of condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, soy sauce, and vinegar can enhance the flavor of your dishes and add a finishing touch. Many can be combined together to create your own sauce with the benefit of managing your desired flavor. Don’t get me wrong, store bought sauces can be useful but crafted ones can pack more flavor!
7. Nuts and Seeds:
Nuts and seeds are great for snacking and adding texture to dishes. High in protein and good fats, they help us maintain a balanced diet. Keep a variety on hand, such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds.
8. Dried Fruits:
Dried fruits are a healthy and convenient snack option. They can also be added to baked goods, salads, and trail mixes. Our kids love to eat them straight out of the package. If you do enjoy them, purchasing your own dehydrator may be a sound investment.
By keeping these key items in your pantry, you’ll always be prepared to create delicious meals without having to make a last-minute trip to the grocery store. Happy cooking! See you on the trail!
